Costa Rica: Pura Vida and Biodiversity

Costa Rica, a Central American nation, is known for its "pura vida" (pure life) philosophy, abolished military, and commitment to environmental conservation. Despite its small size, Costa Rica contains 5% of Earth's biodiversity.

Costa Rica has protected over 25% of its land as national parks and reserves, pioneering ecotourism and sustainable development. The country generates nearly 100% of electricity from renewable sources, primarily hydroelectric and geothermal. Cloud forests, rainforests, volcanoes, and both Pacific and Caribbean coasts create extraordinary ecosystem diversity.

Costa Rica abolished its military in 1949, redirecting funds to education and healthcare, resulting in high literacy and life expectancy. The nation consistently ranks as one of the world's happiest countries. "Pura vida," meaning both "pure life" and serving as greeting, farewell, and life philosophy, captures Costa Rican optimism and appreciation for simple pleasures.
