Ethiopia: Ancient Independence and Coffee Origin
Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa, is one of the world's oldest nations and Africa's only country never colonized (except for brief Italian occupation). With ancient Christian traditions, unique alphabet, and as coffee's birthplace, Ethiopia maintains proud independence and distinct culture.
Ethiopia's Orthodox Christianity dates to the 4th century, with rock-hewn churches of Lalibela among the world's most remarkable religious sites. The Ark of the Covenant is believed housed in Axum. Ethiopian civilization includes the ancient Axumite Kingdom and medieval Christian empire. Ethiopia uses its own calendar and time system, being roughly seven years behind the Gregorian calendar.
Coffee originated in Ethiopia's highlands, and Ethiopian coffee ceremony remains central to social life. Ethiopian cuisine features injera (spongy flatbread) and wot (spicy stews). Ethiopian runners dominate distance running, particularly in Olympic events. Despite poverty and recent conflicts, Ethiopians maintain fierce national pride, cultural richness, and optimism. Addis Ababa hosts the African Union headquarters, reflecting Ethiopia's continental leadership role.
