Guatemala: Maya Heritage
Guatemala, in Central America, has the largest Maya population of any country and features impressive Maya ruins including Tikal. Volcanic highlands, colonial Antigua, and Lake Atitlán create stunning landscapes, though the country faces poverty and inequality.
Tikal, in the rainforest, is one of the largest Maya sites with towering pyramids. Antigua Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage colonial city, features baroque architecture and is surrounded by volcanoes. Lake Atitlán, surrounded by volcanoes and Maya villages, is considered one of the world's most beautiful lakes.
Over 40% of Guatemalans are indigenous Maya, maintaining languages, traditions, and colorful textiles. The country suffered a brutal 36-year civil war ending in 1996. Coffee is a major export. Despite natural beauty and cultural richness, Guatemala faces gang violence, poverty, and emigration. Maya traditions remain strong despite historical oppression.
