Guinea: West African Resources
Guinea, on West Africa's Atlantic coast, has enormous mineral wealth including bauxite (aluminum ore), gold, and diamonds. Despite resources, Guinea remains poor due to decades of authoritarian rule, corruption, and recent Ebola outbreaks.
Conakry, the capital, is a major port city. Guinea's diverse landscapes include coastal plains, highland regions, and savanna. The country is ethnically diverse with Fulani, Malinké, and Susu peoples. Mount Nimba, shared with neighbors, is a UNESCO World Heritage site with unique biodiversity.
Ahmed Sékou Touré led Guinea to independence in 1958 but established an oppressive regime. The country has struggled with military coups and instability. Guinea was an Ebola outbreak epicenter in 2014-2016. Despite challenges, Guinean culture includes rich musical traditions. Bauxite mining offers economic potential if corruption and governance improve.
