Micronesia: Federated Island States
The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) consists of over 600 islands across four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The scattered islands feature diverse cultures, WWII wrecks, and pristine marine environments.
Yap is famous for stone money—massive limestone discs still used ceremonially. Chuuk Lagoon contains the world's greatest concentration of divable WWII wrecks. Pohnpei has mysterious Nan Madol ruins, called the "Venice of the Pacific"—ancient stone city built on coral reefs. Palikir on Pohnpei is the capital.
FSM has Compact of Free Association with the US, providing defense and financial support in exchange for strategic access. Many Micronesians serve in the US military. The country faces challenges of remoteness, limited economy, and climate change. Traditional cultures maintain canoe building, navigation, and distinct customs across different islands.
