Rwanda: Land of a Thousand Hills

Rwanda, a small landlocked East African nation, is known for mountain gorillas, dramatic transformation since the 1994 genocide, and being one of Africa's cleanest countries. The "Land of a Thousand Hills" has rebuilt remarkably under strong governance.

The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi killed approximately 800,000 people in 100 days, leaving deep trauma. Since then, Rwanda has focused on reconciliation, development, and unity. Monthly community service (Umuganda) brings citizens together. Plastic bags are banned, making Rwanda remarkably clean. Kigali, the capital, is considered one of Africa's safest and most organized cities.

Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park attracts tourists and supports conservation. Rwanda's government, led by Paul Kagame, has achieved economic growth and reduced poverty while facing criticism over human rights. Gender equality initiatives have made Rwanda's parliament majority female. Coffee cultivation supports rural livelihoods. Rwanda's transformation represents both achievement and ongoing debates about development models.
