Senegal: West African Democracy

Senegal, on West Africa's Atlantic coast, has maintained stable democracy since independence, rare in the region. Known for rich musical traditions, vibrant culture, and Dakar's energy, Senegal represents West African artistic and political achievement.

Dakar, the westernmost major African city, serves as West Africa's cultural and economic hub. The Dakar Rally (now in Saudi Arabia) originated in Senegal. Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was a major slave trading center and now serves as powerful memorial. Senegal's music scene, including mbalax and artists like Youssou N'Dour, has achieved international acclaim.

Senegalese culture emphasizes "teranga" (hospitality), with visitors welcomed warmly. Wrestling is the national sport, combining traditional rituals with modern spectacle. Despite challenges, Senegal maintains democratic institutions, press freedom, and religious tolerance (Muslims and Christians coexist peacefully). French colonial influence remains through language and administrative systems.
