Delaware: First State
Delaware, the second-smallest state, was first to ratify the Constitution, earning the nickname "First State." Known for business-friendly corporate laws, more than half of US publicly-traded companies are incorporated in Delaware despite its small size.
Delaware features Atlantic beaches including Rehoboth Beach, the Brandywine Valley with du Pont family estates and gardens, and historic sites. Dover is the capital. Wilmington is the largest city and financial center. The state has no sales tax, attracting shoppers. Delaware Bay oysters are prized.
Delaware's economy relies on financial services, chemical companies (DuPont originated here), and poultry farming. The Court of Chancery handles corporate disputes with expertise. President Joe Biden represented Delaware in the Senate for 36 years. Despite small size, Delaware's corporate influence is enormous. Tax-free shopping and beaches attract visitors. The state maintains small-town character despite economic importance.
