Hawaii: Aloha State

Hawaii, the only US state composed entirely of islands, is located in the Pacific Ocean about 2,400 miles from California. The 50th state (admitted 1959) features volcanic landscapes, tropical climate, unique Polynesian culture, and strategic military importance.

Hawaii consists of eight main islands: Hawaii (Big Island with active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes), Maui, Oahu (home to Honolulu and Pearl Harbor), Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau, and Kahoolawe. Native Hawaiian culture emphasizes aloha spirit, hula dance, and respect for land. The state has unique ecosystems with many endemic species. Tourism drives the economy.

Pearl Harbor's 1941 attack brought the US into WWII. Hawaii's strategic Pacific location hosts major military bases. The state has highest cost of living and relies on imports for most goods. Native Hawaiian sovereignty movement seeks recognition. Despite Americanization, Hawaiian language and culture persist. Surfing originated in Hawaii. The state's beauty and culture create paradise image, though locals face housing affordability challenges.
