Maryland: Old Line State

Maryland, on the Mid-Atlantic coast, wraps around Washington D.C. and features Chesapeake Bay, strong federal government ties, and diverse geography from beaches to mountains. The state blends Southern and Northern characteristics.

Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the US, defines Maryland geography and culture. Baltimore, the largest city, has Inner Harbor revitalization and rich history. Annapolis, the capital, hosts the US Naval Academy. Maryland crabs (steamed with Old Bay seasoning) are legendary. Fort McHenry inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner." The state has beautiful Eastern Shore beaches and western mountains.

Maryland's economy includes federal government (NIH, NSA, Fort Meade), biotechnology, defense contractors, and fishing. The state has highest median household income. Johns Hopkins University and University of Maryland are major institutions. Maryland's location near D.C. creates suburban commuter culture. Despite divisions between liberal Baltimore/suburbs and conservative rural areas, Maryland maintains strong identity. Lacrosse is hugely popular.
