The state serves as bedroom community for New York and Philadelphia, creating commuter culture. Jersey diners, pork roll (Taylor ham), and tomatoes are local icons. Bruce Springsteen celebrates working-class New Jersey. Despite jokes about industrial corridor, much of the state is suburban and rural. New Jersey has high income and education levels but faces affordability challenges.
