North Carolina: Tar Heel State

North Carolina, in the Southeast, has diverse geography from Atlantic beaches to Piedmont research triangle to Blue Ridge Mountains. The state has transformed from tobacco and textiles to technology and banking while maintaining Southern culture.

The Outer Banks feature wild beaches and Wright Brothers' first flight site. Charlotte is a major banking center (Bank of America headquarters). Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Research Triangle is a technology hub. Asheville in the mountains has arts scene and Biltmore Estate. Great Smoky Mountains (most visited national park) are on the Tennessee border. College basketball rivalry (Duke, UNC, NC State) is intense.

North Carolina's economy includes banking, technology, pharmaceuticals, furniture, agriculture (tobacco, sweet potatoes), and military bases (Fort Bragg). The state has experienced rapid growth and demographic change. Barbecue (eastern vs. western style debate), Krispy Kreme, and Cheerwine are local favorites. North Carolina balances conservative rural areas with liberal urban centers. NASCAR heritage runs deep. The state's moderate politics have shifted with transplants and urbanization.
