South Carolina: Palmetto State

South Carolina, in the Southeast, is known as the "Palmetto State" and was first to secede from the Union before the Civil War began at Fort Sumter. The state features beautiful Atlantic coastline, historic Charleston, and strong Southern identity.

South Carolina's economy includes manufacturing (BMW, Boeing, Michelin), tourism, agriculture, and military bases. The state has experienced rapid growth, particularly in Charleston and Greenville. Gullah Geechee culture preserves African heritage. Barbecue mustard-based sauce is distinctive. Clemson and University of South Carolina have intense rivalry. Southern hospitality and conservative politics define culture. The Civil War heritage remains controversial with debates over Confederate symbols.
